When you’re going through a divorce, one of the things you need to think about is how to protect your case. You want to be sure that the things you say and do represent you positively and that you don’t say or do anything that could hurt your case.
With how prominent social media is today, a lot of people post about their separations, break ups and divorces, but it’s really better if you don’t do so until your divorce is resolved.
Using social media during your divorce is a bad idea, because your spouse can go through your pages and posts to see what you’re doing. They can use timestamps from photographs to help with their case, for example, or take screenshots of negative posts about them to show to the judge.
While social media can help you if you’re trying to investigate your spouse, it’s typically harmful to your own case. That’s why most would suggest to shut down your social media while going through a divorce. Not all people do things on social media that will hurt a divorce case, but it’s not worth the risk.
Even if you set your account to private or make it so only your friends can see your posts, you could still find that you are open to scrutiny. If anyone else can see your posts, there is a risk of them leaking and getting to your spouse, so it’s better not to make any and to shut down your account while the case is pending.
If you absolutely must be on social media, take steps to keep yourself safe. Make your posts private so they’re only visible to you. Don’t accept new friend requests from people you don’t know.
Doing a few of these things can help, but keep in mind that anything you put on the internet could stay there permanently. It’s not worth the risk to continue posting online, since your statements could be used in court.
