Many people who struggle with traumatic brain injuries find that there is a kind of plateau they reach with recovery. This is normal, but it’s something some people want to find a way to get past.

Interestingly, an April 15 report indicates that adapted cognitive behavioral therapy could be effective for treating traumatic brain injuries. The study examined the factors that link CBT-adapted therapy and positive responses of reduced anxiety and depression in patients with traumatic brain injuries.

Anxiety and depression are common for victims of traumatic brain injuries

Anxiety and depression are both common in people who have traumatic brain injuries. For that reason, it is important for studies to take a look at how psychological support and treatment can help. In the current study, 45 patients (all currently being treated for TBIs) participated in a randomized controlled trial that looked at how well nine CBT-adapted sessions for anxiety and depression would work following a TBI.

The study found that patients who were older when they suffered a TBI and who had higher levels of anxiety were able to see a greater symptom reduction with CBT. For those with depression, it was found that an expectancy for change, combined with the length of time since the injury, could predict a greater reduction in depression symptoms.

Blue-light therapy could be beneficial for TBI victims

During another study, it was discovered that blue-light therapy could be beneficial for patients with traumatic brain injuries. The double-blind, randomized study looked at 35 patients who had suffered concussions within the last 18 months.

Many of these patients had symptoms such as being unable to concentrate, struggling with depression or trouble sleeping. Blue light exposure in the morning was shown to improve the patients’ circadian rhythm. This was then linked to better sleep patterns, a better mood and more alert patients.

When you suffered your TBI, you knew that it would have a lasting impact on your life. Studies like these could help you find new treatment options if you’re affected with issues like insomnia or depression. No two patients are the same, but being able to find new treatment options like these and to pursue them is one benefit of making your personal injury claim or workers’ compensation claim after your injury. The long-term consequences of a brain injury may still be able to be managed if you can find the right solution for your body.
